Recent Acquisitions from the Museum’s Latin American Art Collection
(through December 12, 2010)
This large and bountiful installation of more than fifty works in various media illustrates the commitment by the Museum to add to its contemporary holdings art that reflects the character and heritage of Broward County’s growing Hispanic community.
Among the forty-three artists included in the exhibition are works by Carlos Betancourt, María Brito, Benjamin Caňas, Kcho, Guillermo Kuitca, Tomás López, and Arnaldo Roche-Rabell. The first significant Latin American work accessioned by the Museum of Art was The Prayer in the Desert, a Surrealist canvas by Mexican artist Xavier Esqueda, which entered the collection in 1973. ![]() Since that time, the Museum has added more than 400 works by other Latin American artists, including more than 200 works by 115 Cuban-born artists, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive holdings of contemporary Cuban art outside of the island. The exhibition and its accompanying publication are made possible by the Sansom Foundation and AutoNation. ![]() |
